    Elder Care From Long Distance

    February 19, 2018

There are 7 million caregivers in the nation who do so from a long-distance. In these situations there is increased stress, because the worry is more extreme when you cannot physically be present to support an elder in their home. Please consider establishing a relationship with a Care Manager who can ease your worries by providing in-home care, oversight, and accompaniment to doctors’ appointments. Some think of a Care Manager as the specialist who oversees all of the moving pieces. Similar to how a Primary Care Physician oversees your health and wellness, and your Accountant your finances, a Care Manager will help oversee eldercare!

For example, the spice turmeric helps to reduce pain and inflamation. As people age they lose their appetite. There can be a number of reasons as to why this happens to elders. A key point is that they do crave sugar and will usually eat many sugary things. It can be a hard to determine what is the best approach to dealing with situations such as this. For example, if an elder loses too much weight, it can lead to many more serious problems. Or they can eat sugary things, which can help them maintain weight and a better quality of life, but they will not get the nutrients they need. Each situation and person is different. However, talking through scenarios such as this, with a trained care manager, can be very helpful.

Signs to Look for in Elders Over the Holidays

    November 24, 2017

During holiday visits with elders, ask yourself these questions to ensure they are healthy and safe.

    How is their hygiene?
Are they wearing appropriate clothing for the weather?
Has their steadiness while walking changed?
Do they have any visible bruises or cuts?
Has there been changes in their daily routine?
Have they stopped attending important social events?
Are they getting asked repetitively for large amounts of money?
Are they more forgetful or repetitive during conversation?
Do they seem hopeless and sad?
Do you find spoiled items in the fridge?
Is there a large pile of unopened mail?
Any new scratches or dents on the car?

If you answered yes to any of these tell them about what you have observed and ask them about it. If you have observed multiple items call us for a free consultation so we can assist you in connecting them with the best resources in NorthernVirginia.

    Repetitive Questioning in Dementia Care

    September 25, 2017

In-home Dementia Care can be difficult to manage. The individual with Dementia often asks repetitive questions in the early to middle stages of their illness. We have some helpful tips for you to use while coping with this. Try not to say, “You already said/asked that.” If they are telling a story and parts are incorrect, try not to correct them. This can be difficult day in and day out, but it is important to meet them where they are at. Remember, they cannot control what they are experiencing with their changes in memory, and correcting them will make them feel discouraged and guilty. This being said, it is important for you to have time to yourself, so that your potential irritability and frustrations lessen and you are better able to cope.
