    Encouraging elders who struggle with Dementia to do things can be very difficult. It may even seem as though they don’t want to perform certain tasks. However, the likely reason, is that the question or instructions are too complex for them to process. It is important to remember that their brains aren’t processing the same way ours do. Keep questions and instructions simple and use only a few words at a time. For example, “Dinner time”… wait 30 seconds, “let’s stand up now”… wait again, “we are going to the table”. 30 seconds seems like an eternity to us, but research shows it is the amount of time someone with Dementia needs to understand what is being said.

    Do you ever find yourself wondering what to talk to an elder about when they are struggling with their mood or memory? Here are some helpful hints:

    – Reminisce with them about common categories; holidays, seasons, parenting, traveling.
    – Talk about the present moment; weather, lunch, surroundings.
    – Take out a magazine or photo album to use as a tool to discuss what you both see in some of the photos and images.

    These are some ideas to help you get started in helping an elder engage in conversation in order to continue stimulating their mind.

    Do you ever wonder if you should take the Elder in your life, who is struggling with Dementia, to a holiday gathering? It is important to remember that too much stimulation, such as, more than a few people, being away from their familiar surroundings, and a lot of noise can cause them anxiety and more confusion.
