The most common question I hear from clients is, how do I know the right company to choose for senior care? Whether it is home care, assisted living, or a nursing home, this question always comes up. In Northern Virginia, we are fortunate to have many companies to choose from, but that makes decision making harder.
Here are some tips of what to ask:
– Tell me about how you ensure personalized care and individual preferences.
– What do you do when an employee calls out sick?
– How do you support your staff in the difficult daily work they do?
– Tell me about your procedures for communicating with responsible parties.
These open ended questions can give you a lot of information. But if they don’t, that may be a sign that it may not be a good fit.

If you ever feel this is happening to someone you know please call your local Ombudsman. You can even make an anonymous call if that is more comfortable. Ombudsman are appointed by the state to advocate for and ensure that the rights of elders are being honored.

As people age they lose their appetite. There can be a number of reasons as to why this happens to elders. A key point is that they do crave sugar and will usually eat many sugary things. It can be a hard to determine what is the best approach to dealing with situations such as this. For example, if an elder loses too much weight, it can lead to many more serious problems. Or they can eat sugary things, which can help them maintain weight and a better quality of life, but they will not get the nutrients they need. Each situation and person is different. However, talking through scenarios such as this, with a trained care manager, can be very helpful.
Many focus on weightloss for a new years resolution, which is not necesaarily bad, but why not strive to take care of yourself in multiple ways. If you can’t take care of yourself how can you care for others? Find ways to care for your overall well-being.

If they do stay at home with care here’s a tip to make it easier on the Caregiver. Use a battery operated door alarm on all doors so the Caregiver is aware of when they are trying to leave the house.

Are they getting asked repetitively for large amounts of money?
Are they more forgetful or repetitive during conversation?
Do they seem hopeless and sad?
Do you find spoiled items in the fridge?
Is there a large pile of unopened mail?
Any new scratches or dents on the car?

The great thing is, they even provide local transportation to and from the center! The elder can even volunteer there if they are resistant to going for their own benefit. Often, people will do things for someone else before themself.
