    Elder Care and Daylight Savings Time

    Daylight Savings Time affects everyone, but if you are caring for an elder who has Sundowner’s Syndrome due to Dementia, it can be more difficult to adjust to the time change. Everyone’s Circadian Rythyms are affected when we turn the clocks back or forward. When individuals have Dementia their brains are already tired after working hard all day to work through the cognitive difficulties they experience. In the afternoons, the brain is tired and overworked. As a result, Daylight Savings Time and Sundowner’s Syndrome often cause changes in mood, anxiety, and wandering, all in the late afternoon and early evening. Here are some tips to help lessen these symptoms; keep naps to one or two times a day and less than 20 minutes, keep as many lights on as possible, and try to keep a routine every day.

    Repetitive Questioning in Dementia Care

    In-home Dementia Care can be difficult to manage. The individual with Dementia often asks repetitive questions in the early to middle stages of their illness. We have some helpful tips for you to use while coping with this. Try not to say, “You already said/asked that.” If they are telling a story and parts are incorrect, try not to correct them. This can be difficult day in and day out, but it is important to meet them where they are at. Remember, they cannot control what they are experiencing with their changes in memory, and correcting them will make them feel discouraged and guilty. This being said, it is important for you to have time to yourself, so that your potential irritability and frustrations lessen and you are better able to cope.

    When parents age and need more support, it is common for sibilings to have strained relationships due to one sibling taking on more responsibility in assisting their parents with in-home support. There are ways to prevent family relationships from being negatively affected by the experiences that occur as a result of aging parents. First and foremost, show appreciation for the support someone is providing. Second, ask for assistance from others in the family. Also, consider utilizing the many senior care services available in your area. This will be better for your parents and for your relationships with your family members.
