Directions for an Elder with Dementia

Encouraging elders who struggle with Dementia to do things can be very difficult. It may even seem as though they don’t want to perform certain tasks. However, the likely reason, is that the question or instructions are too complex for them to process. It is important to remember that their brains aren’t processing the same way ours do. Keep questions and instructions simple and use only a few words at a time. For example, “Dinner time”… wait 30 seconds, “let’s stand up now”… wait again, “we are going to the table”. 30 seconds seems like an eternity to us, but research shows it is the amount of time someone with Dementia needs to understand what is being said.

Elder Care Success Story in Northern Virginia

A story of helping a new client… Our client’s Father and Mother lived with her for years. Her Father was the caretaker for her Mother who had Advanced Dementia. Unfortunately, her Father died suddenly and she was faced with having to navigate a number of things while grieving, taking care of not only her Mother but her children, and identifying what her Father was responsible for and overseeing those items. She came to us asking for help, because she felt like she was drowning and didn’t know what to do. After our assessment of her Mother, we were able to suggest and set up Home Care on the weekends. Therefore, someone could take care of her Mother, so she could get a break and spend time with her family. We also found an affordable and well run Assisted Living for respite care, so she can go away for a yearly vacation. While she was away we went to the Assisted Living to ensure her Mother was receiving the exceptional care she deserves. Stories like this show why we are so passionate about helping our neighbors!

It is not easy to support an older adult with Dementia!

Have you ever wondered how to respond to someone with Moderate Dementia…
When they reminisce but there is a part of their memory they aren’t remembering correctly? Try not to correct them, just go along with it.

When they ask the same question over and over again? Just answer the question, because telling them they already asked that, will make them feel bad about something they have no control over.

Elder care at home can be exhausting for Caregivers (family and hired professionals). We Care Management, LLC can help support you and brainstorm different approaches to the obstacles you face!
